ECONOMIE DE
L'INTEGRATION
EUROPEENNE

WHY AND HOW
EUROPEAN
COMPANIES REACH
OUT TO SILICON
VALLEY
Le nouveau défi
américain 2
This paper draws on the observation of non-American companies which
have located technical teams in the Silicon Valley in order to develop,
acquire or learn interesting technologies, and discuss why they
came here and what they get. Effective absorption of technologies
appears to rest on two conflicting conditions. On the one hand,
the subsidiary has to be well connected inside Silicon Valley, which
depends on the building of local ligitimacy and on involvement in
numerous informal networks. On the other hand, very efficient communication
and coordination with key decision- makers and technical people
of the geographically and culturally remote group is critical, in
order to have them consider the ideas collected by the subsidiary,
as well as good absorptive capacity of the parent organization.
